At a recent EP Carrillo event I was gifted a few samples of the forthcoming Re+United cigar that is being distributed by EP Carrillo, advertised by Foundry (General) and is a combined effort of former student (Michael Gianinni) and teacher (EP Carrillo). The real winner being the teacher.
The reason I say that is because the some of the tobacco used in this blend was tobacco that Ernesto Carrillo had put away to use on a blend that never came to be. Once Ernesto left La Gloria Cubana the tobacco remained behind. So now more then 5 years later he was able to go back and utilize some of this tobacco in this limited edition cigar that for now is limited to 1,500 boxes of 10.

Appearance & Construction: The band features a gold on gold layout (where have I seen that before?) that almost creates an iron cross out of the initials of MPG and EPC, with the P being the shared initial. In the back the band comes together similar to the design of the box which will have a wood/aluminum appearance. The wrapper is a dark Ecuador wrapper that comes off as very rustic. There is some tooth to the wrapper and some significant veins as well. Under the fingers the cigar is firm and the foot well packed with a classic Dominican cap.
Flavor & Notes: The cold draw of the cigar has some earthy components and a faint hickory while at the foot the hickory is more noticeable and a bit of pepper. Once the cigar is lit there is a nice amount of subtle spices over a beautiful note of hickory and some nuts. The first third continues with a hickory note as the primary and a combination of nuts and earth.
As we enter the second third of the cigar the wood notes become less defined as the nuttiness comes front and center with some coffee notes and a warm spice through the nose and a sweetness on the finish.
In the last third of the Re+United the hickory returns with an almost caramel like sweetness. The spice remains through the nose but it’s never overpowering and it adds to the complexity of this exquisite cigar.
Smoking Characteristics: At times it looked like the wrapper might develop a burn issue with a jagged appearance but it always corrected itself. The light ash was firm although a little flaky at times. The cigar burned at a comfortable temperature right down to the nub when I put it down as there was no more room to hold the cigar.
Conclusion: While it is rare for two companies to work together it isn’t the first time and I hope it isn’t the last time for these two icons of the cigar industry. The Re+United is a cigar that stands alone with little comparison to General or EP Carrillo, the result is an epic cigar. When these limited edition smokes come out I plan to buy them as soon as my local shop gets them in next month (June ’14).
